Authority is the competence to give orders for the carrying out of tasks. This competence is vested with the burgomaster for the maintenance of public order and care. The burgomaster is accountable to the city council. If the police is deployed for investigations into punishable offence, the police follows the instructions of the public prosecutor, who is a member of the Public Prosecution Department. The Public Prosecution Department, which falls under the Ministry of Justice, is responsible for maintaining the legal order where it concerns violations of the Criminal Code.
